Oct 15, 2018 - During a high-level visit to the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) in Khartoum, Sudan, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pledged the World Health Organization's commitment to work with and support the MRC in developing better diagnostics, treatment, and prevention tools for mycetoma, an infectious disease caused by bacteria or fungi that mostly affects the feet of manual workers, laborers, and herdsmen between the ages of 15 and 30 in developing countries.
Oct 12, 2018 - The Longitude Prize published a report on "Innovation in AMR: patent trends for novel diagnostics," which revelaed that, although the last decade saw a general increase in the number of patent filings related to point-of-care diagnostics aimed at pathogens and infectious diseases, the annual number of filings has been recently declining.
Sep 28, 2018 - The Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) announced that, in December, it will open a transnational call to JPIAMR member countries and eligible countries in Asia and Africa for proposals for innovative research projects on new or improved diagnostics and surveillance strategies. The pre-proposal deadline will be February 2019.

Fighting Superbugs in India: A Short Film (The Longitude Prize and India’s Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) - A 10-minute film follows stories from India where antibiotic resistance is growing rapidly and features interviews with doctors, patients, and researchers to highlight the urgency of the problem. Filmmakers also spoke with teams competing for the Longitude Prize to make rapid diagnostic tests that will hopefully help address the spread of superbugs in India and globally.

Nov 8, 2018 - In the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, Robert J. van de Peppel, MSc, et al modeled polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–based diagnostics and empirical therapy choices based on epidemiologic data of triazole resistance in invasive aspergillosis, finding that the implementation of PCR testing was projected to result in treatment-susceptibility mismatches of less than 5% when modeled against a triazole resistance rate up to 20%.
