Newsletter Highlights

Jul 12, 2018 - In the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy,Eric Wenzler, PharmD, et al review the implementation of rapid molecular diagnostics for bloodstream infections, with particular attention to the needs of hospitals that may lack clinicians trained in infectious diseases or antimicrobial stewardship.

Jul 12, 2018 - In Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, Megan E. Gray, MD, et al found that an intervention comprising implementation of rapid diagnostics plus telephone consultation with an infectious diseases fellow reduced time to appropriate therapy by more than 10 hours for patients with enterococcal bloodstream infections.

Jul 12, 2018 - In Clinical Infectious Diseases, Xiang-Sheng Chen, MD, PhD, et al propose a multifaceted intervention comprising surveillance, outcomes measurement, antibiotic stewardship, diagnostics, antimicrobial assessment, and population pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics for expanding interdisciplinary research on gonococcal resistance in China.

Jul 12, 2018 - In the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, Antonio Morales, PhD, et al evaluate the efficacy of empirical antibiotic therapy using a novel decision support method to enhance the usefulness of regional antibiograms, finding that the efficacy of antibiotics recommended by the new method on 15,799 cultures and 356,404 susceptibility tests was significantly greater than the efficacy of the antibiotics actually administered.

Jul 12, 2018 - In MD Magazine, Ryan Shields, PharmD, MS, describes how the integration of rapid diagnostics may improve care and prescribing for patients with infections caused by carbapenem-resistant bacteria. And in the same magazine, Thomas Lodise, PharmD, PhD, discusses methods of classifying risk, interpreting susceptibility breakpoints, and establishing surveillance for multidrug-resistant pathogens.
