Martha W. Swain

Martha W. Heiberg

Ms. Swain is an editorial consultant at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP). She was editorial director from CIDRAP's founding in 2001 until early 2008. She has been in the field of medical publishing for 36 years, specifically in writing and editing for medical professionals, staff management, production (print and electronic), foreign licensing, and Web site development. She has worked for medical journals published by the New York Times, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, and McGraw-Hill. She spent 20 years at McGraw-Hill as managing editor of Postgraduate Medicine, a leading journal with an international circulation of 140,000. Marty was an original staff member of ican, Inc., serving as managing editor of Web sites aimed at healthcare professionals in the field of infectious disease prevention and control. At ican, she assembled and managed an editorial staff of seven, developed and administered all systems for workflow and production, worked closely with technical staff on the architecture of the sites and the content management system, and coordinated the fast-paced operation of the constantly changing Web sites.
