Osterholm chosen for One Health advisory board

Dec 1, 2010 – CIDRAP Director Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, has been selected as one of 16 international experts to serve on the honorary advisory board for the Web site of the One Health initiative, the organization announced today.

One Health was established to improve both human and animal health by integrating human medicine, veterinary medicine, and environmental health.

Its mission on its Web site reads: "Recognizing that human health (including mental health via the human-animal bond phenomenon), animal health, and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, One Health seeks to promote, improve, and defend the health and well-being of all species by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians, other scientific health and environmental professionals and by promoting strengths in leadership and management to achieve these goals."

One Health, which was formerly called One Medicine, further states on its site that its strategy is to expand collaboration and communication in all aspects of healthcare by "accelerating biomedical research discoveries, enhancing public health efficacy, expeditiously expanding the scientific knowledge base, and improving medical education and clinical care."

The organization says such efforts "will help protect and save untold millions of lives in our present and future generations."
