Two Michigan swans have avian flu; experts quell concerns

(CIDRAP News) –The federal government announced today that two swans in Michigan tested positive for both the H5 and N1 avian influenza subtypes, but initial genetic sequencing suggests that it is a low-pathogenic type rather than the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain spreading through birds in Asia, Europe, and Africa and causing deaths in humans.

CDC recommends flu shots for more toddlers

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials have made it official that toddlers aged 2 through 4 years should be immunized against influenza each year, adding millions of people to the groups included in flu vaccination recommendations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published its annual flu prevention and control recommendations online yesterday as a lengthy early-release article in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Report: Flu pandemic could cut economic output 3-9%

Report discourages use of antivirals for seasonal flu

Jan 20, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – Researchers who analyzed numerous clinical trials concluded that the two newest antiviral drugs for influenza, oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza), should not routinely be used against seasonal flu—a recommendation flatly rejected by the manufacturer of oseltamivir.
