Salmonella type in Colorado water listed; source still sought

(CIDRAP News) – Water quality officials in Colorado said today that the pathogen that contaminated the city of Alamosa's water system is Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium, which they said might suggest a wild animal source of the pathogen.

Water, cantaloupe blamed in Salmonella outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – State and federal public health officials are managing two large Salmonella outbreaks, one linked to contaminated groundwater that has sickened as many as 216 people in Alamosa, Colo., and another that is apparently connected to imported Honduran cantaloupe and involves 59 illnesses in 16 states and Canada.

CDC pandemic exercise highlights drug, mitigation, travel issues

(CIDRAP News) – In the early stages of an influenza pandemic, cases are spreading among migrant workers in Michigan. The state's health department has a supply of antiviral drugs from the federal stockpile and is using them to treat the sick, but, concerned about breaking federal rules, is withholding them from others exposed to the virus—thereby missing a chance to help contain it.

US seeing flu strain not matched by vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – As seasonal influenza makes its annual march across the country, surveillance data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that 23% of the viruses that have been identified belong to a strain that is not included in this season's vaccine.
