Study suggests masks rival respirators for flu protection

(CIDRAP News) – In findings sure to renew the continuing controversy over respiratory protection for healthcare workers, surgical masks appeared to protect hospital nurses from influenza about as well as N-95 respirators did in a randomized trial conducted in Ontario.

Study says nondrug measures helped in 1918 flu pandemic

(CIDRAP News) – An analysis of historical records in 43 US cities indicates that the early use of nonpharmaceutical measures, such as isolating the sick and banning public gatherings, saved lives in the influenza pandemic of 1918-19.
