USDA stiffens standards for ground beef sent to schools

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has formally adopted tougher safety standards for ground beef used in the National School Lunch program, a move that was first proposed in May and was originally spurred by a newspaper investigative report last December.

FSIS pledges to push harder on E coli tracebacks

(CIDRAP News) – Consumer groups have contended that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigates less aggressively when it finds E coli O157:H7 in routine testing of ground beef than it does when an E coli outbreak is linked to contaminated meat. As a result, the groups argue, the agency misses a chance to prevent some illnesses.

Federal budget proposal boosts food safety, biodefense

(CIDRAP News) – The Obama administration today released its $3.8 trillion budget for the 2011 fiscal year, trimming some public health programs but posting notable gains for food safety and bioterror countermeasures.
