Another study suggests greater novel H1N1 pathogenicity

(CIDRAP News) – The pandemic H1N1 virus in different animal models causes more lung damage and can replicate efficiently in the trachea and deep in the lungs when compared with its seasonal flu counterpart—a pattern seen in the 1918 pandemic virus—according to a study published today.

WHO to ask countries to ease novel H1N1 testing

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) said today it will soon advise most countries to ease the volume of testing for novel H1N1 influenza and said testing related to recent oseltamivir-resistant cases has so far turned up no additional cases.

HHS extends liability shield to antivirals used for H1N1

(CIDRAP News) – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently provided a shield against damage claims related to the use of the antiviral drugs oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza) in the current H1N1 influenza pandemic.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius signed a notice extending liability protection under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act. It was published in the Federal Register on Jun 19.
