Pneumococcus infection boosts risk of severe illness in H1N1 patients

(CIDRAP News) – H1N1 flu patients who were also infected with a common cause of pneumonia were 125 times more likely to develop life-threatening disease, a team of American and Argentinean researchers reported Thursday.

(CIDRAP News) – People living in the same household were less likely to catch H1N1 influenza from a sick family member than they would have been in past pandemics or during a normal flu season, a team from University College London and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

H1N1 poses grave risk to pregnant women, new moms

(CIDRAP News) – Infection with H1N1 influenza poses a grave danger to pregnant women and those who have just delivered, and the risk increases when they do not receive antiviral treatment very rapidly, California and Atlanta researchers report today online ahead of print in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"This pandemic has the potential to notably increase overall maternal mortality in the United States in 2009," they write.
