Arizona still the hot spot for West Nile

(CIDRAP News) – Arizona continues to bear most of the current burden of West Nile virus (WNV) infections, with 38 of the 57 human cases reported nationwide, according to figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

New Mexico, Arizona have year's first West Nile cases

(CIDRAP News) – The nation's first human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection were reported last week in New Mexico and Arizona, marking the first time the West Nile season has begun so far west.

The New Mexico Department of Health announced last week that a man in San Juan County had tested positive for the virus and had recovered after having only mild symptoms.

West Nile cases soared in past week

(CIDRAP News) – West Nile virus infected 1,067 people the week of Sep 4 to 10, more than double the number the previous week, and claimed 17 more lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far this year there have been 2,923 cases with 54 deaths, the CDC reports in the Sep 12 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. That compares with 4,156 cases and 284 deaths last year.

(CIDRAP News) – The number of new West Nile virus infection cases decreased in the past week compared with the previous week, but the number of deaths rose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

(CIDRAP News) – The number of West Nile virus cases in the United States this year reached 1,442 yesterday, more than double the total reported a week ago, with 21 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Successful screening of blood donations for West Nile ongoing

(CIDRAP News) – As of June 14, all blood donations in the United States are screened for West Nile virus (WNV) through a program among US blood collection agencies (BCAs) that uses nucleic acid–amplification tests (NATs). The program and its success thus far are described in a report in the Aug 15 issue of Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report, released today.
