Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia report first H5N1 outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – Agriculture officials in Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia have confirmed outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in birds, a first for each country.

The outbreak in Bangladesh struck chickens at a state-run poultry farm in Savar, near the capital, Dhaka, the Associated Press (AP) reported today. Government sources said farm workers had recently culled all 30,000 chickens at the farm after many of them died mysteriously, the AP said.

Nationwide Salmonella outbreak reaches 425 cases

(CIDRAP News) – Federal officials tracking a large Salmonella outbreak linked to certain peanut butter brands announced that the number of sickened patients has grown by 55 to a total of 425 cases in 44 states, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a press release this week.

FDA finds Salmonella in ConAgra plant

(CIDRAP News) – Investigators have found Salmonella enterica in samples collected at a Sylvester, Ga., ConAgra plant that made the Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter linked to an illness outbreak involving 370 people in 42 states, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today.
