EU recalls and bans Egyptian sprout seeds

(CIDRAP News) – The European Union today ordered the recall and ban of certain types of seeds from Egypt after a new report from its food safety agency further detailed a link between the products and Escherichia coli outbreaks in Germany and France.

ECDC erases name of importer from report on E coli cases

(CIDRAP News) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has deleted the name of a German seed importer from a risk assessment report on the recent cluster of Escherichia coli cases in France, out of concern about potential unnecessary harm to the company, CIDRAP News learned today.

Egypt, Cambodia report 3 H5N1 cases, 2 fatal

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced H5N1 avian influenza infections in two more Egyptians, one of them fatal, as well as an H5N1-related death in a Cambodian girl.

In a separate report reviewing H5N1 infections that were reported in 2010, the WHO said the epidemiologic picture of human cases hasn't changed, with women having more serious outcomes than men and children more likely to have a mild form of the disease.

FAO: Eliminating H5N1 will take more than 10 years

(CIDRAP News) – Because of deep-rooted barriers, there is little chance that H5N1 avian influenza can be expelled within the next 10 years from the six countries where it remains entrenched, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says in a new report.

WHO confirms 5 H5N1 cases in Egypt, Bangladesh

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed four new H5N1 avian flu cases in Egypt—including a fatality—and one nonfatal case in Bangladesh.

The cases raise Egypt's H5N1 case total this year to 22 and Bangladesh's to 2. In addition, the WHO posted an official notice on its Web site today of a Cambodia case that it had jointly confirmed with Cambodia's Ministry of Health last week.

(CIDRAP News) – Two countries reported five new H5N1 avian influenza infections today, four of them in Egypt and one in Cambodia, including an 11-year-old girl who died from her illness, according to reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the media.
