Vaccine availability opens up as doses approach 100 million

(CIDRAP News) – The nation is reaching a new milestone in its fight against pandemic flu, with the number of vaccine doses expected to reach 100 million by the end of the week and nearly half of states opening up immunization to anyone who wants it, federal officials said today.

Sanofi recalls some pediatric pandemic vaccine doses

(CIDRAP News) – Sanofi has recalled four lots of its prefilled syringe pandemic vaccine for children ages 6 months through 35 months after its post-distribution monitoring found that antigen content dropped slightly below required levels, a problem that federal officials say isn't linked to any safety concerns.

Novartis unveils US cell-based flu vaccine plant

(CIDRAP News) – The era of cell-based influenza vaccine production in the United States seemed to move closer today as Novartis unveiled its new, nearly billion-dollar manufacturing plant in Holly Springs, N.C., but onshore production and marketing of cell-based vaccines remains a few years away.

House committees probe pandemic vaccine decisions

(CIDRAP News) – Federal officials, along with representatives from four vaccine companies, appeared before two US House of Representatives committees today to answer questions about why the nation hasn't stretched scarce pandemic vaccine supply with adjuvants and if a more federally directed distribution system might help vaccine get to more high-risk patients.

CDC says vaccine shortage likely to outlast current H1N1 wave

(CIDRAP News) – The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicted today that the current wave of H1N1 influenza is likely to begin to wane before the shortage of vaccine for it eases.

Dr. Thomas Frieden made the comment at a wide-ranging US House subcommittee session that aired the reasons for and impact of the vaccine delays and the prospects for avoiding a repeat of the problem. The session was streamed over the Web.

Feds see gaps in local plans for surge, vaccine distribution

(CIDRAP News) – A federal review of state and local pandemic preparedness efforts identified some gaps in medical surge planning and said that, while states are typically prepared to distribute antivirals and vaccines, some cities hadn't addressed all of the recommended planning components.

The findings were released today in two reports from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG).

Early results suggest 1 dose of H1N1 vaccine may be protective
