UN: H5N1 responses improving, but threat persists

(CIDRAP News) – Many countries have improved their responses to H5N1 avian influenza outbreaks in poultry in the past year, but the disease remains entrenched in six countries, according to a new report from the United Nations and the World Bank.

Indonesia has another avian flu case

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesian officials have reported an H5N1 avian influenza case in a 12-year-old boy in the Jakarta area, raising the country's human case count to 109, according to news services.

The boy is from the Jakarta suburb of Tangerang and is being treated in a Jakarta hospital, said Muhammad Nadirin, a spokesman for the health ministry's avian flu center, according to a Reuters report published today.

Indonesian boy is latest H5N1 fatality

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesia's health ministry announced today that a 6-year-old boy from Banten province died of H5N1 avian influenza yesterday, according to several media reports.

Runizar Ruesin, an official with the health ministry's avian flu information center, said the boy died in a Jakarta hospital, the Associated Press (AP) reported today. He fell ill on Jul 1 and was hospitalized 4 days later, Ruesin said.

(CIDRAP News) – Vietnamese health officials announced yesterday that two more patients tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, while animal-health officials suggested that unvaccinated ducks may be to blame for Vietnam's recent rash of poultry outbreaks.

China resumes sending human H5N1 samples

(CIDRAP News) – Some of the H5N1 avian flu virus samples from human cases that China has promised to send to a World Health Organization (WHO) laboratory have arrived in the United States, apparently ending an almost year-long lapse in sample sharing.
