Researchers predict high 2011 cholera toll in Haiti

(CIDRAP News) – US researchers are predicting on the basis of mathematical modeling that Haiti could have close to 800,000 cholera cases and 11,100 deaths this year, more than three times the 250,000 cases counted since the epidemic began last fall.

Studies support reactive cholera vaccination

(CIDRAP News) – Against the backdrop of the ongoing cholera epidemic in Haiti, two studies released yesterday suggest that cholera vaccination campaigns launched in response to outbreaks can be worthwhile.

In a small case-control study conducted during an outbreak in Vietnam in 2008, vaccination was found to be 76% effective, according to one of the two reports published by PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Expert group reconsiders cholera vaccine for Haiti

(CIDRAP News) – An expert group convened by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) at its headquarters in Washington, DC, on Dec 17 discussed a possible cholera vaccine for Haiti and suggested developing a global vaccine stockpile.
