Feds detail progress on pandemic preparedness

(CIDRAP News) – In a recent update on pandemic influenza preparedness planning, the US government reported meeting more than 90% of a long list of objectives it set for itself about 6 months ago.

The report charts progress on a wide range of preparedness measures, from shoring up laboratory capabilities to planning for distribution of critical medical supplies and preparing checklists for various sectors of the economy.

Salmonella enteritidis on the rise in chickens

(CIDRAP News) – Sampling by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) over the last 5 years has shown a fourfold increase in the number of broiler chicken carcasses contaminated with Salmonella enterica serotype enteritidis, a strain previously associated mainly with eggs.

Lettuce, ground beef recalls spur new E coli concerns

(CIDRAP News) – A Salinas Valley produce company recalled its green leaf lettuce yesterday because of possible Escherichia coli contamination, only 2 days after an Iowa meat producer recalled about 5,200 pounds of its ground beef for the same reason.

Two deaths probed as E coli cases reach 166

(CIDRAP News) – Nine more cases were found in a nationwide outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections linked to fresh spinach, raising the total to 166, and two more deaths are suspected to be part of the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today.

More Salmonella cases tied to frozen chicken entrees

(CIDRAP News) – In the wake of two outbreaks of Salmonella infection involving 29 cases, Minnesota health officials are warning the public to be careful when cooking frozen, pre-browned chicken entrees.

The outbreaks prompted state health and agriculture officials yesterday to "strongly advise" people not to cook stuffed chicken entrees in microwave ovens because of the risk of uneven and incomplete cooking.

USDA to cut back BSE testing program

(CIDRAP News) – The US government's expanded testing program for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) will be cut back soon, having shown that the nation has "no significant BSE problem," Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said today.

Japan to end BSE-based ban on US beef again

(CIDRAP News) – Japan has conditionally agreed to resume importing US beef, long banned from the country because of concern about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Under an agreement completed today, Japan will send inspectors to the United States this weekend to check beef processing plants and, if they find no problems, will then allow shipments to resume, according to an Agence-France Presse (AFP) report published today.

USDA to help small meat plants improve food safety

(CIDRAP News) – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) yesterday announced plans to provide more help to operators of small meat, poultry, and egg-product plants in improving their food safety programs.
