Flu widespread in 36 states; vaccine supplies vary

(CIDRAP News) – Thirty-six states had "widespread" influenza outbreaks by the end of last week, 12 more states than faced that situation a week earlier, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today.

All western states except South Dakota and Alaska had widespread flu, meaning outbreaks in at least half their regions, the CDC says in the Dec 19 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

HHS buys another 375,000 doses of flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is buying 375,000 doses of influenza vaccine from British drug maker Chiron to boost the nation's waning vaccine supply, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson announced today.

In addition, HHS has negotiated a contract for 3 million doses of the intranasal vaccine FluMist that state and local health departments can buy if needed, Thompson announced.

HHS to buy 250,000 doses of flu vaccine from Aventis

(CIDRAP News) – The federal government will buy 250,000 doses of influenza vaccine from Aventis Pasteur to augment the nation's dwindling supply, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson announced today.

FDA confirms Mexican scallions caused three hepatitis outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday reaffirmed its earlier findings that recent hepatitis outbreaks in Tennessee, Georgia, and Pennsylvania were caused by green onions (scallions) from Mexico.

Salmonella outbreak tied to mangoes treated to kill flies

(CIDRAP News) – A 1999 outbreak of Salmonella infections scattered over 13 states was traced to Brazilian mangoes, which may have been contaminated when they were treated to kill Mediterranean fruit flies, according to a new study.

(CIDRAP News) – An analysis of hepatitis A cases associated with a Chi Chi's restaurant near Pittsburgh points to green onions (scallions) from Mexico as the source of the virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.

Acambis launches clinical trial of West Nile vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – The British biotechnology company Acambis announced yesterday that it has launched the first clinical trial of its vaccine for West Nile virus, called ChimeriVax-West Nile.

The phase 1 trial will involve 60 adult volunteers in Lenexa, Kan., the company said in a news release. The volunteers will receive one of three doses of the West Nile vaccine or a licensed yellow fever vaccine that is being used as a control.

Animal commerce rules tightened to prevent monkeypox

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials have tightened restrictions on trafficking in prairie dogs and African rodents to prevent the spread of monkeypox.

An outbreak of human monkeypox in the United States last May and June was traced to a shipment of imported African rodents. The disease apparently spread from the rodents to pet prairie dogs and on to people, leading to 37 confirmed, 12 probable, and 22 suspected human cases.

Epidemiology work force has grown, but not enough, says CDC

(CIDRAP News) – State health departments have more than doubled their corps of epidemiologists working on infectious diseases and terrorism preparedness in the past 2 years, but the number is still too low, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
