New CDC guidelines profile challenge of norovirus

(CIDRAP News) – A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) makes clear why norovirus is the world's leading cause of gastroenteritis and the leading cause of foodborne disease outbreaks in the United States.

The virus is so contagious that one food handler with contaminated hands can infect hundreds of people, the report says. Those who have had the virus may have little protection against future infection.

E coli outbreak strain found in hazelnut sample

(CIDRAP News) – Lab tests have shown that Escherichia coli O157:H7 coli found in hazelnuts from the home of one of three Minnesotans sickened in a three-state E coli outbreak matches the outbreak strain, Minnesota officials said today.

US TB rate down, but elimination still distant

(CIDRAP News) – The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States dropped almost 4% last year to its lowest level since 1953, but the nation still fell well short of a long-standing goal of eliminating the disease by 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today.
