Group grades states for foodborne illness outbreak reporting

(CIDRAP News) – The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) today released its first report on how well states perform at reporting foodborne disease outbreaks, which they say varies greatly, with seven states earning A grades and 14 getting Fs.

FDA approves preliminary test for norovirus

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced approval of what it calls the first test for preliminary identification of norovirus, intended for use in outbreaks in which there is a likely transmission pathway.

Norovirus, Salmonella hold lead roles in US foodborne outbreaks

(CIDRAP News) – In its annual report on foodborne disease outbreaks, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today that in 2008, norovirus was the most common confirmed cause and that poultry topped the list of implicated food commodities.

Cantaloupe Listeria outbreak grows: 18 states, 72 ill, 13 dead

(CIDRAP News) – Seventeen more listeriosis infections, along with five more deaths, have been linked to a multistate outbreak tied to a Colorado farm's tainted cantaloupes, pushing the total to 72 illnesses and 13 deaths, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said yesterday.
