(CIDRAP News) – Polio cases in Africa were almost halved in 2011, but the disease shows worrisome trends in some countries, health officials reported today as the continent geared up to vaccinate 111 million children against the disease.
The number of suspected and confirmed cases in the nation climbed from 86 to 103.
The now-197-case Ebola outbreak is caused by a novel strain, researchers say.
Guinea has had 8 recent Ebola cases, 3 fatal, and Sierra Leone reports 5 cases and 4 deaths.
Guinea reports 14 new cases and 5 new deaths, and Sierra Leone has 15 new cases and 1 new death.
Ebola cases in Sierra Leone have spiked from 16 on May 27 to 50, and Guinea has 10 new cases and Liberia 1.
