US inspectors find food products hard to trace

(CIDRAP News) – Federal inspectors who conducted a survey to identify gaps in the nation's food traceability system told a House subcommittee yesterday that they managed to trace only 5 of 40 products through the full production and distribution chain and that some food facilities didn't know they needed to keep source contact information.

Tropical fruit cited in US typhoid fever outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – Federal and state health agencies say frozen mamey fruit pulp is the probable cause of seven confirmed and two suspected cases of typhoid fever (Salmonella Typhi infections) in California and Nevada.

Papayas cited in 23-state Salmonella outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – Papayas imported from Mexico are the likely source of a Salmonella outbreak involving 97 cases in 23 states, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today.
