Marburg toll in Angola continues to grow

(CIDRAP News) – The Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Angola has killed more people than the largest previous outbreak of the disease and is continuing to spread, according to the latest reports.

The governor of Uige province in northern Angola, the center of the outbreak, said the province alone has had 150 cases, including 142 deaths, according to an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report today.

Toll in Angola's Marburg outbreak reaches 244

(CIDRAP News) – The death toll in Angola's outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever has climbed to 244 of 266 people infected, but Angolan officials say the epidemic has been confined to the province where it began, according to news reports today.

Ebola cases in Congo rise to 17

(CIDRAP News) – Eight more cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever have been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), bringing the total to 17, according to news services.

The cases were confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization (WHO) spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said in Geneva, according to an Associated Press (AP) report today. She said 6 of the 17 Ebola patients have died.

Study: Pigs susceptible to deadly Ebola strain

(CIDRAP News) – Canadian researchers have shown that an Ebola virus species that can kill humans can also infect pigs and spread among them, raising the specter of Ebola virus as a potential foodborne pathogen.
