WHO sticks with current strains for next flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – Signaling that the current flu strains are likely to persist over the next several months, the World Health Organization (WHO) today recommended sticking with the current trio of vaccine strains for the Northern Hemisphere's next influenza season.

The WHO's vaccine strain advisory committee met on Feb 15 and 16 and released its recommendation on the WHO's Web site. The group recommends the following for next season's vaccine:

Flu activity declining across Northern Hemisphere

(CIDRAP News) – Most measures of influenza activity in the United States continued their gradual decline last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and similar trends were reported in Europe and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Flu situation stays sedate, locally and globally

(CIDRAP News) – Flu indicators fell again in the United States last week as the 2010-11 flu season approaches its end, with very little activity occurring elsewhere in the world, US and global surveillance organizations said today.

All levels were below baseline, even the percentage of deaths from pneumonia and flu, which has lagged the decline of other flu signals, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today.
