FAO warns of possible H5N1 resurgence in birds

(CIDRAP News) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expressed renewed concern today about H5N1 avian influenza, warning of a "possible major resurgence" of bird outbreaks and saying that a vaccine-evading strain has emerged in Vietnam and China.

Egypt, Cambodia report 3 H5N1 cases, 2 fatal

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced H5N1 avian influenza infections in two more Egyptians, one of them fatal, as well as an H5N1-related death in a Cambodian girl.

In a separate report reviewing H5N1 infections that were reported in 2010, the WHO said the epidemiologic picture of human cases hasn't changed, with women having more serious outcomes than men and children more likely to have a mild form of the disease.

WHO confirms 5 H5N1 cases in Egypt, Bangladesh

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed four new H5N1 avian flu cases in Egypt—including a fatality—and one nonfatal case in Bangladesh.

The cases raise Egypt's H5N1 case total this year to 22 and Bangladesh's to 2. In addition, the WHO posted an official notice on its Web site today of a Cambodia case that it had jointly confirmed with Cambodia's Ministry of Health last week.

WHO sticks with current strains for next flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – Signaling that the current flu strains are likely to persist over the next several months, the World Health Organization (WHO) today recommended sticking with the current trio of vaccine strains for the Northern Hemisphere's next influenza season.

The WHO's vaccine strain advisory committee met on Feb 15 and 16 and released its recommendation on the WHO's Web site. The group recommends the following for next season's vaccine:

(CIDRAP News) – Cambodia's health ministry has confirmed that a 5-year-old girl from Phnom Penh recently died from H5N1 avian influenza, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

WHO confirms 4 Egyptian H5N1 cases

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed four H5N1 avian influenza cases in Egypt, three of which had been previously reported in the media, and added new details about the patients' medical care and exposure to poultry.
