World Health Assembly addresses pandemic flu

(CIDRAP News) – The world has an unprecedented warning that pandemic influenza may be imminent, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report that urges swift action to prevent global illness and death.

A WHO report, "Strengthening pandemic influenza preparedness and response," is slated for discussion tomorrow at the organization's annual World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.

Cambodia, Egypt report H5N1 cases; Indonesia demands vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – New human cases of H5N1 avian influenza were reported in Cambodia and Egypt today, while Indonesian officials, according to one news service, said they would not resume sharing H5N1 virus samples unless vaccine manufacturers promise to provide the country with free pandemic flu vaccines.

WHO confirms backlog of 15 Indonesian H5N1 cases

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today recognized 15 H5N1 avian influenza cases from Indonesia dating back to late January, a few weeks after the country stopped sending H5N1 virus samples to the WHO as a protest against developing nations' lack of equal access to pandemic vaccines.

Glaxo to give 50 million doses of H5N1 vaccine to WHO

(CIDRAP News) – GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) promised today to give 50 million doses of its H5N1 "prepandemic" influenza vaccine to the World Health Organization (WHO) for distribution to poor countries.

The vaccine will be delivered over 3 years and be enough to vaccinate 25 million people at two doses each, the United Kingdom–based drug company said in a news release.
