Foodborne bacterial disease rates dropped 23% from 1996 to 2001, CDC says

The incidence of seven commmon foodborne bacterial diseases dropped 23% between 1996 and 2001, at least in part because of new meat-processing safety rules and other federal food safety efforts in the last few years, according to the CDC.

28 E coli cases now linked to beef recall, CDC says in describing probe

(CIDRAP News) – The outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections linked with ground beef from a ConAgra packing plant in Greeley, Colo., has reached 28 cases in seven states, federal health officials said today in discussing their investigation of the outbreak.

US, other countries report E coli cases in recent months

(CIDRAP News) – Numerous Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreaks have occurred in Great Britain, France, and the United States in the past 2 months.

According to news sources, approximately 200 infections and one death have been reported to health authorities. In most cases, local outbreak control teams have found mass-produced contaminated meat to be the cause, and they are working to set strict guidelines to limit the contagion.

(CIDRAP News) – The number of people affected by a nationwide Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak, apparently linked to fresh spinach, has climbed to 114 in 21 states, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said today.

E coli cases reach 183 in 26 states

(CIDRAP News) – The case count in a national outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections linked to fresh spinach rose to 183 yesterday, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The 183 cases represent an increase of 8 since Sep 25. Ninety-five people (52%) were hospitalized, and one more case of the serious kidney condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) was reported, bringing the total to 29 (16%).

Cause of E coli outbreak still elusive as cases mount

Canadian E coli vaccine for cattle gets preliminary nod

(CIDRAP News) – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently gave preliminary approval for field use of the world's first vaccine to reduce Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cattle and thereby help keep it out of food.
