Sprouts suspected in multistate Salmonella outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – Federal officials announced today they are collaborating on an investigation into a multistate Salmonella serotype I 4,[5],12:i:-  outbreak, possibly linked to sprouts served on sandwiches at Jimmy Johns restaurants, that have sickened 89 people in 15 states and the District of Columbia.

CDC revises decade-old foodborne illness estimates

(CIDRAP News) – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released newer, more precise estimates of the foodborne illness burden, suggesting 1 in 6 Americans get sick each year, a rate lower than previously thought.

FDA clears Wright County Egg to resume retail sales

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today cleared Wright County Egg to resume shipping eggs directly to consumers, now that the company has corrected conditions in two of its egg-laying houses and addressed possible sources of Salmonella contamination.

Senate passes food safety overhaul by wide margin

(CIDRAP News) – Ending months of delay, a large bipartisan majority in the US Senate today passed a bill that aims to make the nation's food supply safer by giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more authority over food producers and requiring large producers and processors to develop detailed food safety plans.
