Experts: Regulatory issues are main reason for keeping smallpox virus

(CIDRAP News) – When the World Health Assembly (WHA) considers the fate of the remaining stocks of smallpox virus this week, the debate is likely to be framed in part by a report from a group of independent experts that says the only strong reason for keeping the virus is to satisfy strict regulatory requirements for new vaccines and antivirals.

CDC explores pneumococcal vaccine link to kids' febrile seizures

(CIDRAP News) – In their ongoing investigation of febrile seizures in young children who were vaccinated against flu this season, experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today that they have detected a small excess risk of the condition in those who received the vaccine alongside the new pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.

Feds probe possible febrile seizure link to Sanofi flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – Federal health officials said yesterday they are exploring a possible link between febrile seizures in children younger than 2 after receiving Sanofi's Fluzone flu vaccine, based on a preliminary signal picked up by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) vaccine safety monitoring system.

CDC sees smooth road so far for flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – In a flu vaccine update at a federal advisory meeting today, officials with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said early signs suggest flu vaccine uptake in children is on par with last year and that enhanced monitoring for narcolepsy and seizures has turned up no signals of trouble.
