French tests suggest E coli matches German outbreak strain

(CIDRAP News) – A French probe into a cluster of Escherichia coli O104:H4 infections in Bordeaux revealed today that the strain isolated from patients is genetically related to the one that has sickened thousands of people in Germany, according to a Eurosurveillance report.

Four US cases may be tied to European E coli outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – The case count in Europe's unprecedented Escherichia coli outbreak climbed steeply again today as the number of potentially related cases in the United States rose to four, while a scientific debate continued on whether the outbreak strain, E coli O104:H4, is new or unique.

Studies support reactive cholera vaccination

(CIDRAP News) – Against the backdrop of the ongoing cholera epidemic in Haiti, two studies released yesterday suggest that cholera vaccination campaigns launched in response to outbreaks can be worthwhile.

In a small case-control study conducted during an outbreak in Vietnam in 2008, vaccination was found to be 76% effective, according to one of the two reports published by PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
