Feds detail progress on pandemic preparedness

(CIDRAP News) – In a recent update on pandemic influenza preparedness planning, the US government reported meeting more than 90% of a long list of objectives it set for itself about 6 months ago.

The report charts progress on a wide range of preparedness measures, from shoring up laboratory capabilities to planning for distribution of critical medical supplies and preparing checklists for various sectors of the economy.

Tamiflu may pose risk of mental side effects

(CIDRAP News) – Mainly on the basis of reports from Japan, drug manufacturer Roche and US regulators are warning that influenza patients treated with oseltamivir (Tamiflu) may have an increased risk of self-injury and delirium.

Tomatoes suspected in Salmonella outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – Federal investigators have turned up few solid leads in a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 171 people in 19 states, but some food safety experts are suggesting that contaminated tomatoes and infected food service workers might have played a role.

Novartis claims success in trial of cell-based flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – Swiss pharmaceutical maker Novartis claimed success last week in a phase 3 clinical trial of a seasonal influenza vaccine produced in cell culture rather than in eggs, the conventional production method.

In a news release, the company said volunteers who received the vaccine had at least as strong an immune response as did volunteers immunized with an egg-based vaccine containing the same flu virus strains.

FDA approves 5th flu vaccine

(CIDRAP News) – FluLaval has become the fifth influenza vaccine licensed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use during the upcoming flu season, the FDA announced today.

FluLaval, produced by ID Biomedical Corp. of Quebec, a subsidiary of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), has been marketed in Canada under the brand name Fluviral since 2001. It was granted fast-track review status by the FDA in July 2005.

(CIDRAP News) – Public health and infectious disease experts today called on the United States to develop a "master plan" for development of pandemic influenza vaccines in order to translate scientific advances more rapidly into improved pandemic preparedness.

E coli cases reach 183 in 26 states

(CIDRAP News) – The case count in a national outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections linked to fresh spinach rose to 183 yesterday, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The 183 cases represent an increase of 8 since Sep 25. Ninety-five people (52%) were hospitalized, and one more case of the serious kidney condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) was reported, bringing the total to 29 (16%).
