Pandemic flu virus from 1957 mistakenly sent to labs

(CIDRAP News) – The revelation that samples of the influenza virus that caused the flu pandemic of 1957-58 were inadvertently sent to thousands of laboratories has raised fears of a new pandemic and triggered an urgent effort to destroy the samples.

Non-vaccine aid for needy nations' pandemic response falls short

(CIDRAP News) – While donor countries and organizations have responded well to the need for pandemic flu vaccine for developing countries, the level of giving for other pandemic response efforts in needy countries so far has fallen short, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a recent report.

Flu activity continues late-season climb

(CIDRAP News) – Flu activity in the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe continues to increase, but for the most part, levels of both mild and severe illness are low compared with past flu seasons, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

Activity appears to have peaked in a few Northern Hemisphere locations, such as some countries in Western Europe, North Africa, and northern China, according to the WHO.
