Auditor gave cantaloupe farm high marks before Listeria outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – A private food-safety auditor gave Jensen Farms in Colorado a "superior" rating a few weeks before cantaloupes from the farm were linked to a deadly Listeria outbreak, according to a report from a US House committee.

Report cites mixed data on resistant bacteria in poultry, meat

(CIDRAP News) – A new US government report shows that the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in retail poultry and meat samples in 2010 varied greatly depending on the type of bacteria and meat, with resistant Salmonella in chicken breasts one of the more common findings.

Pet turtles linked to three Salmonella outbreaks in 16 states

(CIDRAP News) – The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced three Salmonella outbreaks linked to pet turtles that have sickened 66 people in 16 states so far.

Trace-back investigations found that turtles with shells less than 4 inches long or their environments are the cause of the outbreaks. Two of the outbreaks appear to involve red-eared slider turtles.

Sushi Salmonella outbreak probe prompts raw tuna recall

(CIDRAP News) – A probe of illness clusters and trace-back investigations have linked a multistate Salmonella Bareilly outbreak to a California company's raw ground tuna that was used by restaurants and grocery stores to make sushi, according to US officials.

Second Salmonella strain cited in growing tuna-linked outbreak

(CIRAP News) – A second strain of Salmonella has been identified in a 21-state outbreak with a contaminated tuna product as the likely cause, and the total number of cases has jumped to 200, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today.
