Plague outbreak highlighted ongoing problem in Africa

(CIDRAP News) – The plot of the world's latest pneumonic plague outbreak echoes with history.

Like a 19th-century American gold rush, news of the discovery of diamonds in a remote northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in November 2004 sparked an influx of adventurers hoping to strike it rich.

Attacks stall surveillance for Marburg cases

(CIDRAP News) – Local residents attacked the vehicles of disease surveillance teams in Angola yesterday, stalling efforts to find Marburg hemorrhagic fever cases even as the toll in the outbreak climbed further, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

The outbreak has expanded to 205 cases, 180 of them fatal, the WHO reported in its latest update. Earlier today, WHO officials at a briefing in Geneva had put the death toll at 174.

Marburg death toll in Angola reaches 122

(CIDRAP News) – The death toll in the Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Angola has risen to 122, just one fewer than in the largest previous outbreak of the disease, according to news reports from Africa.
