Players in H5N1's debut ponder a decade's lessons

In Hong Kong, a newly identified avian influenza virus, recently dubbed H5N1, was making people desperately ill.

GAO assesses avian and pandemic flu planning

(CIDRAP News) – The Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued two reports that address avian and pandemic influenza planning last week, one examining how well the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is prepared to respond to avian flu outbreaks and the other assessing efforts by US and international agencies to help vulnerable countries.

Mild avian flu hits Welsh farm; Nigeria has H5N1 outbreak

(CIDRAP News) – Veterinary officials in Wales confirmed a low pathogenic H7N2 avian influenza outbreak today at a farm near the northern town of Denbighshire, a day after Nigeria reported its first H5N1 avian flu outbreak since late January.

WHO warns against steroids for H5N1 patients

(CIDRAP News) – In the wake of a clinical conference, the World Health Organization (WHO) has modified its recommendations on treatment for patients with H5N1 avian influenza by strengthening a warning against corticosteroids and suggesting the option of using higher doses of oseltamivir in some cases, among other advice.
