A DNA vaccine could help stamp out the outbreak, while a live-attenuated vaccine could offer lifelong immunity.
In other Zika news, Florida reported more local Zika cases over the past few days, officials announced the launch of a vaccine trial, and Palau reported its first local case.
"I would view the results . . . in an optimistic light," said lead author Richard Davey after the drug showed more than 90% efficacy.
In other developments, without Zika funding federal officials have had to tap research money for cancer and other diseases.
Also, officials report sexual transmission in Pennsylvania and the Netherlands.
The money will be spent on added staff, spraying, and community outreach.
Antibodies from infected people were able to inhibit strains from both Asian and African lineages.
It's called antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), wherein the dengue vaccine sets up severe disease in those not previously exposed — and it might have repercussions for Zika.
The US-UK partnership will provide $44 million this year and as much as $350 million over 5 years.
