Avian flu case reported in Vietnam

(CIDRAP News) – Initial testing has shown that a man in northern Vietnam has H5N1 avian influenza, marking the first human case in more than 3 weeks, according to news reports today.

Initial tests were positive for Cao The Hai, 55, from Vinh Phuc province, according to Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuong Van of the Institute of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. The news was reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP) today.

Avian flu experts make recommendations as disease continues its spread

(CIDRAP News) – Thailand, home of the world's fourth-largest poultry industry, has confirmed that the recent re-emergence of avian influenza has spread to 21 provinces, three more than just yesterday. Meanwhile, Vietnam's state media yesterday reported that the disease there now affects Bac Ninh province in the northern part of the country in addition to the 11 southern provinces already affected.

Thai woman dies of avian flu; China lifts quarantines

(CIDRAP News) – Thailand reported its eighth fatal human case of H5N1 avian influenza today, while China announced it was lifting quarantine orders for the last two of 49 areas affected by the disease, according to news service reports.

(CIDRAP News) – Indonesia today joined the rapidly growing list of countries with poultry outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, while more human cases and deaths were confirmed in Vietnam and Thailand.
