Flu virus shows surprising resistance to oseltamivir

(CIDRAP News) – Influenza viruses in 18% of a group of Japanese children who were treated with oseltamivir (Tamiflu) developed resistance to the antiviral drug, which is viewed as one of the key defenses against pandemic influenza, according to a new report in The Lancet.

Study suggests drug-resistant strains of influenza B can spread

(CIDRAP News) – Japanese researchers who identified antiviral-resistant strains of influenza B found that they seemed to circulate in communities and families and to make patients just as sick as their nonresistant counterparts did, contrary to a common assumption that resistant flu viruses are likely to be less transmissible and less virulent.

WHO study finds little resistance to Tamiflu

(CIDRAP News) – Resistance to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) over the three influenza seasons from 2003 to 2006 remained low in Japan, the country with the world's highest use of the drug, according to a preliminary study from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Europe says Tamiflu-resistant virus seen in 9 countries

(CIDRAP News) – European officials yesterday reported more evidence that one of the three types of seasonal influenza viruses is showing resistance to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and said this represents the first clear sign that the resistant variant can spread.

Europe reports further increase in Tamiflu resistance

(CIDRAP News) – European health officials today reported signs of an increasing rate of resistance to oseltamivir (Tamiflu) in Europe's predominant subtype of influenza virus, but they cautioned that the rate seen in isolates tested so far may not reflect the real situation.
