Kentucky shuts down its H1N1 hotlineAfter receiving about 10,000 calls since it began in October, Kentucky's hotline for questions on pandemic and seasonal influenza has been shut down as demand has waned, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Public health officials say the hotline can be reactivated if needed, but in the meantime those seeking flu-related answers can go to the state's Health Alerts Web site (

Hong Kong reports swine-pandemic flu reassortant

(CIDRAP News) – A laboratory at Hong Kong University (HKU) detected a reassortant made up of a swine influenza virus and the pandemic H1N1 virus in a sample obtained from a slaughterhouse pig as part of a surveillance program, officials announced today.

FAO claims progress in avian flu preparedness

(CIDRAP News) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said this week that "substantial progress has been made in the preparedness and response mechanisms" for battling H5N1 avian influenza around the world.
