WHO confirms H5N1 deaths in Egypt and China

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced the deaths of two men from H5N1 avian influenza, one from Egypt and another from China whose death was reported earlier in the media.

China reports another H5N1 death

(CIDRAP News) – A 39-year-old man from southwestern China died yesterday from H5N1 avian influenza, the country's second death in less than a month from the disease, according to Xinhua, China's state news agency.

The man, from Guizhou province, got sick Jan 6 and died in a hospital in Guiyang after 3 days of intensive care treatment, according to the report yesterday.

Undetected H5N1 cases seem few, but questions persist

(CIDRAP News) – The fatality rate for officially confirmed human cases of H5N1 avian influenza infection is a stunningly high 59% (345 deaths in 584 cases). But the current controversy over publishing data about transmissible H5N1 viruses has revived a debate about whether the virus is as lethal as those numbers say.
