Novartis says cell-based flu vaccine facility ready to produce

(CIDRAP News) – Novartis's new cell-culture based influenza vaccine factory in North Carolina has begun making a prepandemic H5N1 flu vaccine and is ready to start producing vaccines for a real pandemic when needed, the company and federal health officials announced yesterday.

The facility in Holly Springs, N.C., billed as the first of its kind in the United States, was dedicated yesterday after a long testing process.

Vaccine virus for novel H3N2 based on 2010 swine flu strain

(CIDRAP News) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) got a head start on preparing a vaccine against the novel swine-origin influenza strain recently found in four states by using a slightly different swine-origin strain that cropped up last year, CDC officials said today.

Revaccination not needed for jet injection flu shot recipients

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said today that people who were immunized against flu with jet injectors, an off-label practice some pharmacies and health departments have recently used, don't need to be revaccinated with a standard needle and syringe.

FDA advises providers to stop offering needle-free flu vaccines

(CIDRAP News) – The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently advised health providers not to use needle-free injector devices to administer influenza vaccines, because so far no flu vaccines have been approved for administration using such devices.

Study of CSL's Fluvax finds higher local reaction rates in adults

(CIDRAP News) – An Australian study that compared levels of adverse reactions in adults who received two different flu vaccines in 2010 has found a higher level of injection site reactions in those who received Fluvax, the CSL Biotherapies vaccine that was linked to febrile seizures in young children.

CDC updates flu vaccination recommendations

(CIDRAP News) – With shipments of influenza vaccine for the upcoming season arriving at healthcare providers' offices, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today released its advisory group's latest recommendations, which have a few changes that apply mainly to younger children and people who have egg allergies.
