Proposed US budget taps prevention funds, leans on user fees

(CIDRAP News) – The Obama administration today proposed a fiscal year 2013 budget that would use prevention funds to cover some preparedness and public health activities and count on user fees to support more of the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) food safety initiatives.

New state reports push Salmonella outbreak count to 383

(CIDRAP News) – The number of patients sickened in a Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes has grown by 106 more cases, a sign that states have ramped up their surveillance in response to the event, federal food safety officials said at news conference yesterday.

US, China report pact to make food imports safer

(CIDRAP News) – Under a food safety agreement announced today by US officials, the Chinese government pledges to register exporters of food to the United States, inspect shipments before they leave China, and set up a system to trace food products through the production system.
