Dengue cases rise in Colombia, Asia-Pacific

(CIDRAP News) – Colombia is seeing twice the usual number of dengue cases this year, and Asian Pacific countries are also experiencing a rise in the mosquito-borne illness, according to health officials.

In Colombia, high temperatures from an unusually strong El Nino weather pattern, combined with heavy rains, helped double the number of dengue infection cases this year, ReliefWeb reported yesterday.

Ebola strikes Congo again

Editor's note: This story was revised Dec 30 to make clear that as of Dec 29, only two cases in the outbreak had been confirmed as Ebola. During the DRC's 2007 outbreak the government confirmed 17 cases, down from 25 it reported earlier, and initial reports during that outbreak mentioned as many as 395 suspected Ebola cases.  Some of the suspected patients had other diseases, including shigellosis.

Marburg death toll in Angola reaches 122

(CIDRAP News) – The death toll in the Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Angola has risen to 122, just one fewer than in the largest previous outbreak of the disease, according to news reports from Africa.
