Avian flu experts make recommendations as disease continues its spread

(CIDRAP News) – Thailand, home of the world's fourth-largest poultry industry, has confirmed that the recent re-emergence of avian influenza has spread to 21 provinces, three more than just yesterday. Meanwhile, Vietnam's state media yesterday reported that the disease there now affects Bac Ninh province in the northern part of the country in addition to the 11 southern provinces already affected.

(CIDRAP News) – Experts in Vietnam confirmed today that avian influenza has spread to an 11th province, the southern Mekong Delta province of Long An, a major poultry breeding area, according to news service reports.

Avian flu suspected in two Thai children

(CIDRAP News) – Two children in Thailand are being tested for possible avian influenza infections, which could be the first human cases since the disease resurged in recent weeks, according to news service reports today.

The cases involve a 14-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, both in the northern province of Nong Khai near the Laotian border, according to a Reuters report.

Avian flu resurfaces in China and Thailand

(CIDRAP News) – Deadly strains of avian influenza have resurfaced on one poultry farm in China and two in Thailand.

China's first outbreak of H5N1 avian flu since March was reported Jul 3 at a farm in Anhui province in the east-central part of the country, according to Xinhua, China's official news service. The national avian flu reference laboratory confirmed yesterday that the disease was due to an H5N1 virus, Xinhua said.

Avian flu strikes again in Vietnam

(CIDRAP News) – Three months after Vietnam declared itself free of avian influenza, the disease has struck there again, causing the loss of at least 4,500 chickens in a southern province, according to news services.

A Reuters report today said chickens on three farms in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu died or were destroyed after testing positive for an H5 avian flu virus.

CDC links 29 Salmonella cases with almonds

(CIDRAP) – An investigation of Salmonella illness cases associated with raw almonds has identified 29 cases in 12 states and one Canadian province, dating back as far as September 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported today.

Indonesian dengue epidemic subsides after 58,000 cases

(CIDRAP News) – The dengue fever epidemic in Indonesia has subsided after 58,301 cases were reported in 4 months, which rivaled the pandemic year of 1998, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

There were 658 deaths among cases of dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever reported from January through April, the WHO said yesterday. The case-fatality rate of 1.1% was lower than in previous years, officials said.

China confirms two more SARS cases

(CIDRAP News) – Chinese officials today upgraded two cases of suspected SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) to confirmed status, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the current outbreak to four, according to news service reports.

A total of nine cases have been reported in China since Apr 22, the World Health organization (WHO) said yesterday. One of the patients died Apr 19, and the other eight were hospitalized, the agency said.
