UK officials detail novel coronavirus cluster findings

(CIDRAP News) – Investigation findings on a family cluster of novel coronavirus (NCoV) infections in Britain indicate some SARS-like qualities but a wider disease spectrum and other differences, according to a report today in Eurosurveillance.

Though earlier clusters were reported among hospital staff in Jordan and a family in Saudi Arabia, Britain's three-patient cluster is the first to be fully documented and published.

Human cell receptor for novel coronavirus discovered

(CIDRAP News) – Scientists reported yesterday that they have found the protein handle on human cell membranes that a recently identified coronavirus uses to latch onto the cells, a discovery that may open the way to drugs or vaccines to block the often-fatal infection and also may shed light on how the virus crosses species barriers.

(CIDRAP News) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) today announced an update of its risk assessment on novel coronavirus, which takes into account the possibility of human-to-human spread, the wider geographic area where infections occurred, and risks the virus may pose to healthcare workers.
