Asian countries teaming up to thwart avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – Overcoming the threat of avian influenza is the single most pressing agricultural and public health issue facing Southeast Asia, Singapore's minister of state for national development, Cedric Foo, said yesterday in opening a regional meeting on the disease, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports.

Malaysia joins resurgence of H5N1 avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – H5N1 avian influenza has today been confirmed in a privately owned flock of chickens in northern Malaysia near the Thai border. The country joins three others, Vietnam, China, and Indonesia, in which the disease has resurfaced in recent weeks following the widespread outbreaks across Asia earlier in the year.

Suspected SARS case reported in Beijing

(CIDRAP News) – A 20-year-old nurse in Beijing has a suspected case of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), according to Chinese news reports. If confirmed, the case would be the first in the Chinese capital since last year and the first in China or anywhere since January.

(CIDRAP News) – An outbreak of avian influenza at a farm in Delaware has been blamed on an H7 influenza virus, which does not infect humans, unlike the H5N1 subtype causing the widespread avian flu outbreaks in Asia.

(CIDRAP News) – Chinese authorities have approved the first human trial of a SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) vaccine, Chinese state news agencies reported yesterday.

SARS case in China confirmed

(CIDRAP News) – The suspected case of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) in a 32-year-old man in southern China has been confirmed by laboratory tests, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

The case is the first in China and the first anywhere in someone other than a laboratory researcher since the end of the global SARS outbreaks last July.
