Experts seek greater push to stop drug-resistant TB

(CIDRAP News) – Tuberculosis (TB) experts who met in Geneva this week said the global TB community needs to step up the fight against drug resistance and increase appropriate care and treatment "to avoid a scenario where TB becomes incurable," the World Health Organization (WHO) said today.

Spain reports first avian flu case in birds

(CIDRAP News) – Spain today became the latest country to join the list of nations responding to outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza, as officials reported finding the virus in a wild bird.

Human H5N1 cases reported in China, Thailand

(CIDRAP News) – Two more human cases of H5N1 avian influenza have been confirmed, one in a Chinese woman who has recovered and the other in a 5-year-old Thai boy who died Dec 7, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.

The cases increase the human toll of the virus over the past 2 years to 137 cases, including 70 deaths, according to the WHO. Exposure to poultry is the suspected cause in both of the latest cases.

Marburg death toll in Angola reaches 122

(CIDRAP News) – The death toll in the Marburg hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Angola has risen to 122, just one fewer than in the largest previous outbreak of the disease, according to news reports from Africa.

Three deaths in Vietnam blamed on avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – Three people in Vietnam died recently of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, the Associated Press (AP) reported today.
