WHO confirms Indonesian H5N1 case; nurses test negative

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed that a 15-year-old Indonesian boy who died May 30 had H5N1 avian influenza, but the agency said four nurses who had suspicious symptoms after caring for avian flu patients were not infected.

Avian flu ruled out in Turkish patients

(CIDRAP News) – Avian influenza has been ruled out in a 14-year-old Turkish boy who died over the weekend and in three siblings who were hospitalized with him, according to news services.

Tests on the four children were negative for avian flu, according to Turkish health officials quoted in an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report published yesterday.

Avian flu claims third victim in Cambodia

(CIDRAP News) – Avian influenza claimed its third Cambodian victim when an 8-year-old girl died in a Phnom Penh hospital Apr 7, news services reported yesterday.

The girl was from Kampot, the same province as Cambodia's first two victims of H5N1 avian flu, said Ly Sovann, head of the Cambodian health minstry's infectious disease department, as quoted in an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report.

North Korea confirms avian flu outbreak in poultry

(CIDRAP News) – North Korea yesterday confirmed recent reports of an avian influenza outbreak among poultry, but officials did not specify whether it involved the H5N1 virus, which has struck nine other Asian countries in the past 16 months.

Vietnam, Thailand continue to battle avian flu

(CIDRAP News) – Vietnam and Thailand have continued to battle avian influenza in recent weeks, with a total of 19 outbreaks reported in a dozen provinces, according to health officials of the two countries.

Vietnam has reported seven outbreaks in six provinces, while Thailand has reported 12 outbreaks in six provinces, according to information published by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

More avian flu in Vietnam, Thai children cleared of diagnosis

(CIDRAP News) – Experts in Vietnam confirmed today that avian influenza has spread to an 11th province, the southern Mekong Delta province of Long An, a major poultry breeding area, according to news service reports.
