FDA approves sixth flu vaccine for US market

(CIDRAP News) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced the approval of an Australian-made influenza vaccine called Afluria for use in adults, raising the number of US-licensed flu vaccines to six.

The vaccine, made by CSL Limited, based in Parkville, Australia, was approved for protecting people aged 18 and older from type A and B influenza viruses.

Edmonton adds ginseng product to pandemic stockpile

(CIDRAP News) – The city of Edmonton, Alta., recently announced that it was stockpiling an herbal supplement in the hope of boosting the immunity of police, firefighters, and other essential workers during an influenza pandemic.

By buying a ginseng product from CV Technologies, Inc., a company based in Edmonton, the city has become the first in North America to add an herbal supplement to its pandemic stockpile, according to media reports.

Roche cuts Tamiflu production as demand cools

(CIDRAP News) – The Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche announced today it is scaling back production of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) because of waning demand, and simultaneously questioned whether countries stockpiling the drug are buying enough to protect their citizens in the event of an influenza pandemic.

Study suggests drug-resistant strains of influenza B can spread

(CIDRAP News) – Japanese researchers who identified antiviral-resistant strains of influenza B found that they seemed to circulate in communities and families and to make patients just as sick as their nonresistant counterparts did, contrary to a common assumption that resistant flu viruses are likely to be less transmissible and less virulent.
