WHO confirms H5N1 cases in Egypt, Vietnam

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed three human cases of H5N1 avian influenza in Vietnam and Egypt, one of which was fatal, raising the global H5N1 count to 346 cases with 213 deaths.

In Vietnam, a 4-year-old boy from the northern province of Son La died of an H5N1 infection Dec 16, the WHO said. He fell ill Dec 7 and was hospitalized on the 11th. His case was first reported by news services on Dec 26.

WHO confirms Myanmar's first human avian flu case

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) today confirmed that a 7-year-old girl in Myanmar has recovered from H5N1 avian influenza, marking the country's first reported human case.

The girl is from Kyaing Tone Township in Shan state near the Chinese border, according to a statement from the WHO. Her illness was detected through routine surveillance following an H5N1 outbreak in poultry in the area in mid November, the statement said.

Human H5N1 cases reported in Laos, Egypt, China

(CIDRAP News) – The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday confirmed Laos' first human case of H5N1 avian influenza, involving a 15-year-old girl from Vientiane, and Egypt and China also have reported new cases.
