GAO critiques anthrax vaccine procurement, management

(CIDRAP News) – The US government's attempt to add a next-generation anthrax vaccine to its stockpile failed because of a premature contract award, unrealistic expectations, and confusion about how the vaccine would be used, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the investigative agency of Congress.

Student treated after anthrax spill in Mississippi lab

(CIDRAP News) – A graduate student working in a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) was treated for possible anthrax exposure following a laboratory accident Aug 11—two days after a US House committee announced plans to hold hearings on biodefense lab safety.

VaxGen stops work on anthrax vaccine, seeks partner

(CIDRAP News) – VaxGen Inc., which lost an $877.5 million contract with the US government for a new anthrax vaccine in December, announced May 24 it was stopping development of the vaccine and said it hopes to license the product to another company.
